Cabinet approves Pune Metro Phase-2 Extension: Vanaz–Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi–Wagholi Corridors

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, extending the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor (Phase-1). The new extension includes two elevated corridors—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B)—spanning a total of 12.75 km with 13 stations. These corridors will connect rapidly growing areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is expected to be completed within four years.

With an estimated cost of ?3,626.24 crore, the funding will be equally shared between the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies. The project is a natural extension of the current Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions an integrated East–West metro corridor from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi.

The new corridors will cater to key IT parks, business hubs, educational institutions, and residential zones—helping to boost public transport usage and increase metro ridership. The extension will also enhance network connectivity through integration at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court), supporting seamless multimodal transport.

In line with Pune’s long-term urban mobility goals, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will connect at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will converge at Wagholi—offering smooth last-mile connectivity via metro. The expansion is also expected to ease congestion on major arteries like Paud Road and Nagar Road by providing safe, fast, and sustainable travel options.

Projected incremental daily ridership on Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, increasing to 2.01 lakh by 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh by 2057. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will oversee all civil, electromechanical, and support infrastructure works. Pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys and detailed design, are already underway.

This metro expansion is expected to unlock Pune’s economic potential, strengthen its urban transport network, and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive growth across the city.
