The government held a high-level meeting with the National Shipping Board (NSB) to discuss emerging challenges in India’s shipping sector and review measures to strengthen maritime capacity amid evolving global geopolitical and trade dynamics.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal chaired the meeting, which was attended by members of the National Shipping Board, industry leaders, maritime stakeholders, and senior officials from the ministry. The discussions focused on operational issues and policy priorities impacting the sector.
Speaking at the meeting, the minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is progressing towards becoming a major maritime power through strategic reforms, infrastructure expansion, and close collaboration with industry stakeholders. He added that these efforts are aimed at unlocking the potential of the blue economy and strengthening India’s position in global maritime trade.
Participants deliberated on the challenges faced by the shipping industry amid recent geopolitical developments, supply chain disruptions, and rising operational pressures on maritime trade. The discussions centered on identifying policy interventions to strengthen India’s shipping ecosystem, expand fleet capacity, and enhance the resilience of maritime logistics. The minister directed officials to prepare a roadmap to address these issues.
The meeting also reviewed progress under key national initiatives such as Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and Maritime India Vision 2030, which aim to expand port infrastructure, boost shipping capacity, and position India as a global maritime hub.
Emphasising the importance of stakeholder dialogue, Sonowal highlighted the role of the National Shipping Board as a key advisory body in addressing industry concerns and shaping policy direction.
The interaction was attended by Sameer Kumar Khare, retired IAS officer and Chairperson of the National Shipping Board, along with other board members and representatives from the shipping industry.
The engagement comes at a time when global maritime trade is facing heightened geopolitical uncertainty and shifting supply chains, prompting India to reinforce its shipping capabilities and operational preparedness. Officials said the meeting reflected the government’s continued efforts to ensure smooth cargo movement and stability in the maritime sector while addressing industry concerns.
