In a major boost to the internationalisation of higher education in India, the Ministry of Education has granted a Letter of Approval (LoA) to University of Liverpool to establish its branch campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
The approval was handed over by Vineet Joshi to Richard Grose in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The university had received a Letter of Intent in May 2025 under the UGC regulations governing foreign higher educational institutions in India. Following the completion of academic, infrastructure, and regulatory requirements, the institution has now been cleared to commence operations.
The Bengaluru campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields such as business management, computer science, game design, finance, and biomedical sciences, with plans to expand into additional disciplines over time.
The move represents another milestone in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to promote global academic collaboration, improve student mobility, and attract leading international universities to India.
Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is among the UK's leading research-intensive universities and is globally recognised for its academic excellence. Its entry into India is expected to expand access to world-class education, strengthen India-UK educational cooperation, and further enhance the country's higher education ecosystem.
