Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said the government aims to bring 75 lakh households under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana by December 2026, building on the scheme's rapid progress since its launch in February 2024.
Speaking at an event marking two years of the scheme, the minister noted that more than 40 lakh households have already benefited, while over 65 lakh applications are currently in the pipeline. He added that around 30 lakh rooftop solar installations have been planned under the Utility-Linked Aggregation (ULA) model, which is intended to accelerate adoption, particularly among underserved households.
The scheme recorded its strongest monthly performance in May 2026, with a record 3.16 lakh rooftop solar installations completed during the month and nearly 15,000 households added in a single day. The pace of deployment has improved significantly, with the time taken to add one lakh households reducing from 118 days earlier to less than eight days now.
According to the minister, more than Rs 22,750 crore in subsidies has been disbursed under the programme so far, including Rs 2,743 crore during May 2026 alone. He also highlighted that over 17 lakh households have achieved zero electricity bills through rooftop solar adoption.
Launched with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has emerged as the world's largest residential rooftop solar programme. More than one crore households have registered on the national portal, while over 33 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed as of May 2026, adding more than 12 GW of capacity.
The government believes the scheme will play a crucial role in strengthening India's energy security, accelerating the clean energy transition, reducing the subsidy burden on power distribution companies, and supporting the country's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
