The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a major step towards enhancing the operation and maintenance (O&M) of national highway assets by appointing General Management Consultants (GMCs) for assets managed under the National Highways Infra Trust (NHIT).
NHIT, an Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) sponsored by NHAI, currently manages 2,653 km of national highways. In the first phase, the newly appointed consultants will oversee the O&M of 908 km of highway assets, with the objective of improving asset performance, operational efficiency, and adopting global best practices.
The GMCs will conduct regular inspections using modern technologies, identify maintenance and safety requirements, supervise repair and improvement works, monitor toll plaza operations, and ensure compliance with SEBI's InvIT regulations. They will also assist in appointing specialised contractors and overseeing project execution.
NHAI said the initiative will strengthen the professional management of highway assets, improve road quality and user experience, create new opportunities for specialised O&M service providers, and enhance investor confidence in India's highway infrastructure through better governance and operational standards.
