Govt strengthens Dairy Sector, Livestock Infrastructure and Animal Health Measures

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening India's dairy and livestock sectors through investments in dairy infrastructure, breed improvement, entrepreneurship and animal health, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) informed the Lok Sabha.

The minister said no reports have been received indicating that dairy farmers are not getting remunerative prices due to the gap between milk procurement and retail prices, with procurement prices being determined by dairy cooperatives and private dairies based on market conditions.

Under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), the government has facilitated the formation of 36,611 new dairy cooperative societies, strengthened 34,557 village-level dairy cooperatives, created 168 lakh litres per day of milk chilling capacity, and distributed 76,748 milk quality testing devices as of June 2026.

Through the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), projects with a combined milk processing and value-addition capacity of 418 lakh litres per day have been approved.

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) has also recorded significant progress in indigenous breed development. Over the past five years, the government has carried out 17.27 crore artificial inseminations, benefiting nearly 5.98 crore farmers, while training 47,687 MAITRIs, establishing 24 IVF laboratories, sanctioning 48 semen stations, and approving 28 heifer rearing centres.

Under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the government has approved 4,291 entrepreneurship projects involving investments of Rs 2,956.79 crore, with subsidies of Rs 1,356.53 crore. The projects are expected to create around 21,000 direct jobs and indirectly benefit nearly 91,000 farmers.

The government also said the Pashujanya Yudh Abhyas (PYA) national mock exercise, conducted in Madhya Pradesh between June 29 and July 3, 2026, successfully enhanced the country's preparedness for zoonotic disease outbreaks by strengthening surveillance, laboratory systems, biosafety protocols and emergency response mechanisms.
