The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed the milestone of 50.06 lakh rooftop solar installations, making it one of the world's fastest-growing clean energy programmes under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Launched with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the scheme has achieved this milestone in just over two years, compared with 7.94 lakh rooftop solar installations completed over the previous decade. Installation momentum has accelerated significantly, with nearly 1 lakh households benefiting every six days. The daily installation rate has increased from 5,038 in October 2025 to around 16,328 in July 2026, while July 2026 alone recorded a record 5.06 lakh installations.

The government has released Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. Nearly 19 lakh households are now reporting zero electricity bills, while over 12 lakh households earned a combined Rs 421 crore by selling surplus power to the grid during FY25.

To improve affordability, concessional loans at 5.75% have been sanctioned to 21.87 lakh applicants, with 17.5 lakh installations completed through loan financing. The scheme has also supported the growth of the rooftop solar ecosystem, with over 34,000 registered vendors, 2.32 lakh trained personnel, and a cumulative commissioned rooftop solar capacity of 14.8 GW.

The programme operates through a fully digital, end-to-end online platform covering applications, approvals, financing and subsidy disbursement. The government has also simplified approvals, expanded incentives for DISCOMs and urban local bodies, and accelerated the solarisation of government buildings, with more than 1.06 lakh government buildings already equipped with rooftop solar systems.

The government said the scheme continues to strengthen India's clean energy transition by promoting decentralized renewable energy, reducing household electricity costs and advancing the country's goals of energy security and energy independence.
