Indian Navy to commission Indigenous Diving Support Vessel ‘Nipun’ on August 31

The Indian Navy is set to commission Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, on August 31, 2026, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The induction will strengthen the Navy’s deep-sea diving and underwater support capabilities.

Indigenously designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL), Visakhapatnam, Nipun was delivered to the Indian Navy on July 30, 2026, after completing extensive outfitting and sea trials.

The specialised vessel is equipped with modern diving and underwater intervention systems to support sustained diving operations in challenging maritime conditions. It will also enhance the Navy’s capabilities for submarine rescue operations.

Nipun features advanced navigation, platform management and station-keeping systems, along with dedicated facilities for diving, underwater intervention and medical support. These capabilities enable the vessel to undertake complex underwater missions as an integrated platform.

The commissioning of Nipun marks another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous defence shipbuilding capabilities and enhancing the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct specialised underwater operations across the country’s maritime areas of interest.
