The rupee weakened 23 paise to close at 95.96 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, pressured by a sharp rise in crude oil prices and a stronger greenback amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
The domestic currency also came under pressure from heavy selling in Indian equities, as risk-averse sentiment strengthened demand for the US dollar. Rising inflation concerns and higher US Treasury yields further weighed on the rupee.
At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at 95.84 and touched an intraday low of 95.98 before settling at 95.96, down 23 paise from its previous close.
