Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals lower start; global markets mixed

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a muted note on January 14, tracking subdued cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading largely flat around 25,760.50.

In a volatile session on January 13, the Indian equity market ended in the red, with the Nifty slipping below the 25,750 mark. The decline was driven by selling pressure across auto, consumer durables, pharma, and realty stocks.

On the result front, several companies are scheduled to announce their quarterly results today, including Infosys, HDFC AMC, ICICI Prudential AMC, Union Bank of India, Billionbrains Garage Ventures, Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers, Aditya Birla Money, Den Networks, HDB Financial Services, Indian Overseas Bank, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, Network 18 Media & Investments, Plastiblends India, Indosolar, and Waaree Renewable Technologies.

Markets will also react to earnings announced on Tuesday by ICICI Lombard, Tata Elxsi, and other corporates.

Overall, investor sentiment is expected to remain cautious amid mixed global cues and a heavy earnings calendar.

On Tuesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83627.69 down by -250.48 points or by -0.3 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25732.3 down by -57.95 points or by -0.22 %.

On the global front, Asian markets showed a mixed trend in early trade. Mainland China’s CSI 300 rose 0.64 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.34 per cent, while South Korea’s KOSPI slipped 0.34 per cent. In contrast, Japan’s Nikkei climbed 1.36 per cent to hit record highs, fueled by expectations that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may call for a snap election in February.

On Wall Street, major indices ended lower overnight, led by a slide in financial stocks. The decline followed a warning from JPMorgan that President Donald Trump’s proposed cap on credit rates could negatively impact the economy.

At the close, the S&P 500 fell 0.19 per cent, the Dow dropped 0.8 per cent, and the Nasdaq eased 0.1 per cent.
