Post-Session: Stock markets extend losses for 2nd day; Sensex drops 245 points

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty declined on Wednesday, extending their previous day's losses, due to weakness in IT, consumption, and select banking blue-chip stocks amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

Besides, persistent foreign fund outflows and fresh tariff-related uncertainties also unnerved investors, traders said.

Meanwhile, NSE and BSE will remain shut on Thursday, January 15, 2026, on account of municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 83382.71 down by -244.98 points or by -0.29 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25665.6 down by -66.7 points or by -0.26 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 83809.98 and intraday low of 83185.2 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25791.75 and intraday low of 25603.95

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 944.60,+3.77%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 189.25,+3.70%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 348.70,+3.21%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1299.55,+2.98%), UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 12235.00,+1.65%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2815.35,-2.39%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3192.30,-2.30%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 16135.65,-1.77%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1700.55,-1.69%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2353.45,-1.53%), among others.

Metal index was at 38459.35 up by 1001.19 points or by 2.67%. Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 675.70,+6.06%), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 373.40,+4.51%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 654.40,+3.90%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 189.25,+3.70%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 152.20,+3.05%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4515 , shares advanced were 2124 while 2193 shares declined and 198 were unchanged.
