Pre-Session: Sensex, Nifty likely to start on a negative note today

Indian benchmarks are expected to start the day on a negative note on Tuesday. GIFT Nifty futures indicated a negative start for the benchmark Indian equity indices on Tuesday amid weak global cues.

Meanwhile, Asian stocks were mixed this morning while the dollar edged higher after two days of losses.

In the commodities market, Oil prices were marginally lower after Trump said his preference was for a nuclear deal with Iran before talks this week. Gold fell nearly 1 percent due to profit taking after climbing toward $5,250 an ounce earlier.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83294.66 up by 479.95 points or by 0.58 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25713 up by 141.75 points or by 0.55 %.

On the global front, Wall Street’s major indices tumbled amid persistent concerns over artificial intelligence-driven disruption and the fallout from Friday’s US Supreme Court ruling, prompting investors to move away from high-risk equities.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 491.25 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 101052.48 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 291390 with a total turnover of Rs. 49422.81 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 4868805 with a total turnover of Rs. 326641.29 Crore.

Total numbers of contracts for index options were 178443291 with a total turnover of Rs. 30096202.95 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 10635090 with a total turnover of Rs. 753103.76 Crore.

The FIIs on 23/02/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 11662.33 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 970.95 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 11907.26 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 120.93 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -244.93 Crore and Rs. 850.02.
