Mid-Session: Sensex plunges 979 points; NSE Nifty at 23901.85

Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex extended their losses as investors remained cautious while assessing the evolving situation in West Asia, with the ongoing blockade at the Strait of Hormuz continuing to weigh on the global energy supply outlook.

At 12:50 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 76684.34 down by -979.66 points or by -1.26 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23901.85 down by -271.2 points or by -1.12 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 77710.82 and intraday low of 76607.38 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24206 and intraday low of 23878.8

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 3055.00,+0.29%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 786.40,+0.24%), State Bank of India (Rs. 1095.45,+0.12%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 370.75,+0.09%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1166.45,-6.13%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1206.00,-5.57%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2403.45,-4.72%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1358.00,-4.39%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1624.90,-3.27%), among others.

_Bankex index was at 63117.72 up by -350.79 points or by -0.55%. HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 786.40,+0.24%), State Bank of India (Rs. 1095.45,+0.12%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 370.75,+0.09%),.

IT index was at 27744.59 down by -1399.88 points or by -4.8%. Genesys International Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 263.20,-6.35%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1166.45,-6.13%), Coforge Ltd. (Rs. 1146.60,-6.05%), Cigniti Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1131.00,-5.58%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1206.00,-5.57%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4381 , shares advanced were 1188 while 2992 shares declined and 201 were unchanged.
