Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty hints negative start; most Asian markets fall

Indian equity markets are expected to open on a weak note today, with GIFT Nifty indicating a gap-down start. The index was trading around 24,650, down 90 points, as steady crude oil prices and mixed signals from the US and Iran regarding a potential peace deal weighed on global sentiment.

In the previous trading session, the benchmark indices ended in positive territory despite a volatile day. The Nifty50 closed above the 24,600 mark, led by strong buying in PSU banking stocks. However, the upside remained limited due to weakness across the metal, media, and realty sectors.

On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 78954.76 up by 373.76 points or by 0.48 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24636 up by 11.35 points or by 0.05 %.

On the global front, most Asian markets declined, mirroring similar moves in their Wall Street peers. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were trading 1.26 per cent and 1.73 per cent down, respectively.

Overnight, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average settled 0.18 per cent and 0.85 per cent down, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite settled 0.06 per cent down.
