State-run Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported a 6% decline in coal production to 229.8 million tonnes (MT) during the April–July period of the current fiscal, compared to 244.3 MT in the same period last year, the company said in a BSE filing on Friday.
While CIL did not specify the reasons for the decline, industry experts suggest that the drop is likely due to monsoon-related disruptions, which typically affect mining activities and coal dispatches to power plants.
This comes despite the government’s ongoing efforts to ramp up domestic production and reduce dependence on coal imports.
