Adani Power bags LoA for 2,400 MW Greenfield Thermal Power Project in Bihar

Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private sector thermal power producer, has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL) for long-term procurement of 2,400 MW of power over 25 years. The supply will come from a greenfield ultra-supercritical plant (3x800 MW) to be established at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district, Bihar.

The LoA was issued by BSPGCL on behalf of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL). This will be followed by the signing of a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) between the parties.

India’s electricity demand is projected to rise significantly, with peak demand expected to touch ~400 GW by 2031-32 and exceed 700 GW by 2047, driven by industrial growth, urbanisation, and population expansion. To address this surge, the government has planned to add ~100 GW of new thermal capacity by 2035. Thermal power will continue to play a vital role in ensuring energy security, offering reliable, round-the-clock base-load and grid-balancing support.

“Adani Power, as the country’s largest private sector thermal power producer, has consistently delivered dependable capacity at scale,” said S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power. “Our upcoming ultra-supercritical Pirpainti project in Bihar will set benchmarks in efficiency and sustainability, while ensuring affordable, uninterrupted power supply that supports industrialisation, strengthens the state’s economy, and enhances prosperity.”

Adani Power had earlier won the project through a competitive tariff-based bidding process, quoting the lowest supply rate of ?6.075 per kWh. The company plans to invest nearly $3 billion in the project and associated infrastructure.

The plant is expected to generate 10,000–12,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and around 3,000 jobs once operational.
