Jindal Steel to double structural steel capacity at Raigarh to 2.4 MTPA by Mid-2028

Jindal Steel on Monday announced a major expansion of its structural steel manufacturing capacity at its Raigarh facility, with plans to double capacity from 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 2.4 MTPA by mid-2028.

The expansion is aimed at significantly improving the availability of heavy and ultra-heavy structural steel sections in India, while further strengthening Jindal Steel’s leadership position in the structural steel segment.

As part of the roadmap, the company will commission a new dedicated structural steel mill, along with advanced upstream and downstream technology upgrades. These enhancements will enable the production of larger, heavier, and more complex parallel flange sections required for next-generation infrastructure and energy projects.

Currently, Jindal Steel manufactures parallel flange sections ranging from 100 mm to 900 mm, with sectional weights of up to 333 kg per metre. Post-expansion, the facility will be capable of producing ultra-heavy sections up to 1,100 mm depth and 1,500 kg per metre, marking a significant leap in domestic manufacturing capability.

The expanded capacity will cater to rising demand from infrastructure, refineries, power, renewable energy, transmission, and high-rise construction projects, while also helping reduce India’s dependence on imported heavy structural steel sections.

Commenting on the development, Subrat Panda, Head – Structures & CSB, said the expansion is a strategic move to build long-term domestic capability for large and complex projects, enabling faster execution, better design efficiency, and reduced import reliance for critical infrastructure and energy applications.

Jindal Steel continues to promote the adoption of high-strength structural steel, supporting efficient construction, optimised material usage, and improved sustainability across steel-intensive sectors.
