L&T Bags Large Contract for India’s Biggest 3,000 MW Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra

The Heavy Civil Infrastructure business of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a large order from Torrent Energy Storage Solutions for the construction of India’s largest pumped storage project, the Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project, with a total capacity of 3,000 MW, located in Raigad, Maharashtra.

The project will comprise ten units of 300 MW each. Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for the design, engineering, and execution of all civil and hydro-mechanical works associated with the project.

With this order, L&T is set to play a pivotal role in delivering a project of national significance, expected to enhance grid reliability and energy security for Maharashtra and other regions. The win underscores L&T’s proven capabilities in executing complex hydroelectric and pumped storage projects, backed by a strong track record of engineering excellence, timely execution, and world-class safety standards.

Pumped storage projects such as Saidongar-1 are critical for ensuring grid stability and meeting peak power demand. By storing surplus energy during off-peak periods and releasing it during high-demand hours, these projects offer a flexible and reliable energy solution, supporting India’s long-term decarbonisation and energy security goals.

*As per L&T’s classification, a “large” contract typically falls within a specified high-value range.
