RBI Issues Internal Ombudsman Directions, 2026 to Strengthen Grievance Redressal

The Reserve Bank of India has issued the Reserve Bank of India (Internal Ombudsman) Directions, 2026, after examining feedback received from stakeholders and the public on the draft directions released on October 7, 2025.

The central bank said the feedback on the draft Master Direction – Reserve Bank of India (Internal Ombudsman for Regulated Entities) Directions, 2025 was reviewed in detail, and suitable modifications were incorporated into the final framework. A statement outlining the feedback received and the action taken has been provided in an annexure.

Accordingly, the RBI has notified separate Internal Ombudsman Directions, 2026, for different categories of regulated entities, including commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, non-banking financial companies, non-bank prepaid payment instrument issuers, and credit information companies.

The new directions are aimed at strengthening the internal mechanisms for resolution of customer grievances within regulated entities, the RBI said.
