ABB India modernises BPCL’s Vadinar–Bina pipeline to boost reliability and energy security

ABB India Ltd has successfully completed a critical energy infrastructure modernisation programme for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) by upgrading the automation and monitoring systems of the Vadinar–Bina Pipeline (VBPL). The 935-km cross-country crude oil pipeline is a key asset supporting India’s energy security, supplying 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum to BPCL’s Bina refinery.

As part of the project, ABB undertook a comprehensive modernisation of the pipeline’s automation using the ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage system. The scope included replacement of 35 remote terminal units across pumping, pigging and sectionalising valve stations, installation of new SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina, and strengthening of cyber security and resilience through enhanced network protection, system hardening and centralised monitoring.

BPCL said the upgrade was completed seamlessly without any shutdowns, significantly improving system resilience and cyber security. The implementation of failover capability and disaster recovery servers at both ends of the pipeline is expected to ensure uninterrupted operations even under challenging conditions.

Commenting on the project, Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar–Bina Pipeline at BPCL, said the modernisation has greatly enhanced the reliability of the entire pipeline infrastructure while ensuring continuous operations. G Balaji, Senior Vice President at ABB India’s Energy Industries division, said the project demonstrates ABB’s ability to deliver future-ready and resilient technologies for India’s critical energy infrastructure without disrupting operations.

ABB and BPCL have collaborated on multiple strategic projects over the years, with ABB providing automation solutions across nearly 66 per cent of BPCL’s pipeline network, reinforcing a long-standing partnership in strengthening the country’s energy backbone.
