Bharti Airtel Launches AI-Powered Fraud Alert to Curb OTP-Linked Bank Scams

Bharti Airtel has introduced an AI-powered Fraud Alert solution aimed at protecting customers from bank frauds caused by One-Time Password (OTP) leakages. The new feature delivers real-time protection against the growing threat of OTP-related scams, where fraudsters manipulate users into sharing banking transaction codes.

Scammers often exploit the urgency surrounding routine services such as deliveries to trick customers into disclosing sensitive banking OTPs, putting their savings at risk. Airtel’s newly developed AI-driven system detects potentially risky situations during incoming calls and issues an on-the-spot fraud alert. If a bank OTP is triggered while a customer is on a suspicious call, the network intervenes with a warning, prompting users to verify before consenting to receive or share the OTP.

The company said this combination of AI-led intelligence and timely user intervention empowers customers to pause, assess, and retain control over their financial security, effectively closing the gap that fraudsters typically exploit.

Commenting on the initiative, Shashwat Sharma, Managing Director and CEO, Airtel India, said the company is committed to making Airtel the safest network. He noted that while OTPs remain fundamental to securing digital transactions, their effectiveness is often compromised by criminal tactics. He added that the newly developed autonomous solution operates proactively at the network level, detecting and intervening in fraudulent activity in real time. According to the company, extensive trials have demonstrated high accuracy and a significant impact in curbing such scams.

Over the past two years, Airtel has implemented AI-driven safeguards such as spam call warnings and malicious link blocking to combat fraud at its source. Despite a substantial reduction in network-level fraud, scammers have continued to exploit human vulnerabilities through impersonation and social engineering tactics. The latest feature marks another step in strengthening digital security for mobile users.

The solution is currently live in Haryana, with plans to roll it out to 100 percent of Airtel customers nationwide over the next two weeks.
