RBI imposes Rs 31.80 lakh penalty on Airtel Payments Bank

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 31.80 lakh on Airtel Payments Bank Limited for non-compliance with regulatory norms related to disclosure in financial statements.

The penalty, ordered on March 30, 2026, was levied under provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, following supervisory findings during the Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2025), which assessed the bank’s financial position as of March 31, 2025.

The RBI found that the bank had failed to disclose certain complaints in its annual financial statements for FY25. After reviewing the bank’s response, additional submissions, and oral representations, the central bank concluded that the lapse warranted monetary penalty.

The RBI clarified that the action is based on regulatory compliance deficiencies and does not question the validity of any transactions undertaken by the bank. It also noted that the penalty is without prejudice to any further action that may be initiated.
