Indian Railways has announced a nationwide fire safety audit of railway stations to strengthen passenger safety and improve emergency preparedness across its network.
The comprehensive exercise will evaluate existing fire prevention and response systems at stations and identify areas requiring upgrades or corrective action. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the protection of passengers, railway personnel, and critical infrastructure against fire-related risks.
The audits will cover key safety components, including station buildings, electrical systems, air-conditioning and ventilation facilities, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, water supply arrangements, pumping systems, and sprinkler installations. Officials will also review adherence to prescribed fire safety norms and operational standards.
Joint inspection teams comprising officials from multiple railway departments will conduct the audits. Where necessary, assistance from specialized agencies and State Fire Departments will be sought to ensure a thorough assessment of safety measures.
Any shortcomings identified during the inspections will be addressed on a priority basis, with necessary upgrades and corrective actions implemented to strengthen emergency response capabilities.
The initiative reflects Indian Railways' continued focus on enhancing safety standards and ensuring that railway stations remain well-equipped to handle emergencies, thereby providing a safer travel environment for millions of passengers across the country.
