The Ministry of Coal will release 'AAROH – Annual Report on Mine Closure' in New Delhi on July 22, 2026, highlighting India's progress in scientific mine closure. The report marks a significant milestone, showcasing the scientific closure of 42 coal mines for the first time since Independence, with a focus on ecological restoration, sustainable land use, and community development.
The event will also feature the signing of an Implementation Agreement with Germany's Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to strengthen technical cooperation on scientific mine closure, institutional capacity building, knowledge sharing, and adoption of global best practices for post-mining land use.
Additionally, tripartite MoUs will be signed between Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), the Jharia Rehabilitation and Development Authority (JRDA), and private industry partners to establish vocational training centres under the Revised Jharia Master Plan. The programme will also showcase innovations in mine reclamation and ecological restoration, along with the inauguration of Coal NEER Plants to improve access to safe drinking water in coal-bearing regions.
The initiative reflects the Ministry's continued focus on transforming mine closure into an opportunity for environmental restoration, sustainable development, and long-term socio-economic growth.
