Captive & commercial coal production rises 9.6% YoY to 14.78 MT in July

India's Captive and Commercial coal mines maintained strong growth in July 2026, with coal production increasing 9.61% year-on-year to 14.78 million tonnes (MT).

Coal dispatches during the month stood at 17.49 MT, reflecting improved operational efficiency, higher mining productivity, and better utilisation of mining capacities across the sector.

The Ministry of Coal said the continued rise in domestic coal production is expected to reduce reliance on imports, strengthen energy security, conserve foreign exchange, and support the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The ministry added that it will continue to drive production growth through policy support, regulatory oversight, and measures to improve coal availability for the country's expanding energy and industrial needs.
