HAL, Safran sign final contract to develop Aravalli Helicopter Engine

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final contract with their joint venture SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd for the design, development, manufacturing and lifecycle support of a new-generation helicopter engine in the 3,500-4,000 shp power class.

Named “Aravalli”, the engine has been selected to power HAL’s upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

The programme marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s indigenous aerospace propulsion capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign technologies for critical helicopter engines. SAFHAL will combine the expertise of HAL and Safran across engine design, advanced manufacturing, testing and lifecycle support.

The partnership could also open opportunities for future civil applications, including offshore transportation, utility missions and VVIP operations, while supporting the development of India’s domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) ecosystem.

The Aravalli programme builds on the long-standing HAL-Safran partnership, which includes engines powering platforms such as the Cheetah, Chetak, Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Combat Helicopter and Light Utility Helicopter.
