De Core to set up Rs 900-cr unit for LEDs

De Core Nanosemiconductor Ltd. - a unit of De Core Science & Technologies Ltd. is eyeing to invest Rs. 900 crore for the manufacturing of (Light Emitting Diode) LED-LCD TV and high frequency electronics segment for its semiconductor chips.

The company also plans to manufacture Blu-ray discs from its upcoming Nanosemiconductor chip plant for lighting systems at Gandhinagar at a later stage.

Its LED unit is expected to bear a capacity of 400 million small chips at Gandhinagar, to be used mostly for LED luminaires. It will be producing 70 lakh LED lamps annually at Noida

Mr. Deepak Loomba, MD and CEO of De Core Nano-semiconductors Ltd. said the Gandhinagar unit will not only come out with semiconductor chips for lighting systems, but the company is also planning to manufacture Blu-ray laser technology in the coming years. Beside chips, the unit would also manufacture LED luminaires.

The semiconductor chips are required to manufacture LED-based energy-efficient lamps.

The company has a plant for LED lamps coming up in Noida.

Mr. Loomba said the LED lamps plant in Noida is likely to commence in 2 months. For these LED lamps, the company requires chips, which the company has decided to produce in India. He said, making chips in India will bring down the cost of LED lamps.

Mr. Loomba also said the company is setting up this plant in GIDC Electronic SEZ on 4 acres of land and are also eyeing to buy 2 more acres adjacent to it.

The company also intends to invest Rs. 1,100 crore in the next 5 years for manufacturing of LED lamps, including Rs. 900 crore on the Gandhinagar plant and Rs. 200 crore at Noida unit.

He said the company also wants to make chips for those fifth generation mobile phones in future. These phones will have the capacity to transfer or download data at speeds of more than 40 Mbps.
