Post Session: Sensex rises 125 pts; Yes Bank soars 13%

Indian benchmark indices ended higher on Wednesday led by gains in banking and auto stocks amid firm cues from other Asian markets.

Yes Bank was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 13.47 per cent, following reports that digital payments major Paytm may buy a stake in the lender from co-founder Rana Kapoor.

The 30-share benchmark index closed trading at 37270.82 up by 125.37 points or by 0.34 % and then NSE Nifty was at 11035.7 up by 32.65 points or by 0.3 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 37343.46 and intraday low of 37193.57 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11054.8 and intraday low of 11011.65.

Tata Motors, Maruti, Tata Steel, Vedanta, Bajaj Auto, IndusInd Bank, SBI, Hero MotoCorp, M&M, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, RIL and L&T too jumped up to 10.21 per cent

On the other hand, ONGC, HCL Tech, NTPC, Sun Pharma, TCS, Bajaj Finance, PowerGrid, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the top losers on the index, shedding up to 2.93 per cent.

Besides positive cues from global markets, investor sentiment was buoyed on hopes of further measures by the government to boost the economy, experts said.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said the government has set up a task force to boost investments in infrastructure projects and is in the process of identifying sectors which need funding from the Centre.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hang Seng, Nikkei and Kospi settled significantly higher, while Shanghai Composite Index ended in the red.

Among the sectors, Realty index was at 2049.87 up by 87.42 points or by 4.45%. Oberoi Realty Ltd. (Rs. 565.05,+10.21%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 946.00,+5.79%), Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 6.36,+4.95%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 160.40,+4.02%), Sunteck Realty Ltd. (Rs. 465.40,+3.30%),.

IT index was at 15914.37 down by -207.33 points or by -1.29%. Shivalik Bimetal Controls Ltd. (Rs. 60.20,-4.82%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 248.15,-2.91%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1057.25,-2.48%), Larsen & Toubro Infotech Ltd. (Rs. 1635.30,-2.42%), NIIT Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1413.25,-2.21%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2986 , shares advanced were 1936 while 875 shares declined and 175 were unchanged.
