Equity benchmark ended lower on Monday amid selling mainly in banking and IT stocks as mounting coronavirus cases kept investors globally on edge.

During afternoon session, market recovered marginally but failed to sustain the gains as European markets opened lacklustre which further weighed on already negative sentiments, he added.

Further, geopolitical tensions like India-China border issue and US-China trade tiff also kept participants on edge, traders said.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 34961.52 down by -209.75 points or by -0.6 % and then NSE Nifty was at 10312.4 down by -70.6 points or by -0.68 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 35032.36 and intraday low of 34662.06 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10337.95 and intraday low of 10223.6

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1076.40,+1.97%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2182.55,+1.30%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1357.95,+1.27%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 567.25,+1.24%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 197.20,+1.08%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 404.75,-4.78%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 541.60,-3.47%), State Bank of India (Rs. 179.30,-2.87%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 937.00,-2.65%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 480.05,-2.50%), among others.

Among the sectors, FMCG index was at 11238.35 up by 93.45 points or by 0.84%. Avanti Feeds Ltd. (Rs. 522.65,+10.85%), Coastal Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 246.50,+8.28%), LT Foods Ltd. (Rs. 42.75,+5.95%), Associated Alcohols & Breweries Ltd. (Rs. 273.35,+5.62%), EID Parry (India) Ltd. (Rs. 286.00,+4.99%),.

On the flip side, Realty index was at 1582.07 down by -47.98 points or by -2.94%. Brigade Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 136.15,-5.55%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3163 , shares advanced were 1260 while 1740 shares declined and 163 were unchanged.
