Post-Session: Sensex ends 84 pts up; metal, IT stocks shine

Indian markets remained volatile on April 8 but indices managed to close in the green for the third consecutive day despite profit-taking at higher levels. After surpassing the psychological levels of 50,000 and 14,900 on the Sensex and the Nifty, rising 0.5 per cent in the early morning deals, the indices ended around 0.2 per cent higher.

Among the sectors, buying was seen in metals, consumer durables, industrial, IT, and realty stocks, while profit-taking was seen in power, utilities, banks, and energy space.

Strong global cues, dovish monetary policy and expectations of a strong March quarter supported bullish sentiment.

The 30-share benchmark index ended a 49746.21 up by 84.45 points or by 0.17 % and then NSE Nifty was at 14873.8 up by 54.75 points or by 0.37 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 50118.08 and intraday low of 49581.61 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 14984.15 and intraday low of 14821.1

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 7042.95,+4.24%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 1573.75,+3.95%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1028.30,+2.52%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 17709.00,+1.66%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3316.50,+1.40%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 935.35,-1.07%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 103.55,-1.05%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 614.30,-1.05%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3649.25,-1.01%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1433.55,-0.95%), among others.

Among the sectors, Metal index was at 16338 up by 694.66 points or by 4.44%. JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 614.30,+9.25%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 415.75,+6.95%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 95.65,+6.51%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 917.65,+4.90%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 318.85,+3.67%),.

Power index was at 2514 down by -26.36 points or by -1.04%. Adani Transmission Ltd. (Rs. 1002.15,-5.00%), Thermax Ltd. (Rs. 1353.00,-3.54%), Adani Power Ltd. (Rs. 97.40,-2.55%), Adani Green Energy Ltd. (Rs. 1166.10,-2.40%), KEC International Ltd. (Rs. 425.15,-1.82%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3381 , shares advanced were 2009 while 1174 shares declined and 198 were unchanged.
